Ever since childhood, you have been going through a set routine when you wake up and a different set routine before you go to bed. An integral part of both of these routines is brushing your teeth. Even though you may have been doing it for years, you may still not know how to brush teeth properly. To ensure that your teeth and gum are getting cleaned thoroughly, you need to learn to use the toothbrush correctly.
Let us see what can come from not brushing your teeth properly. You can easily put yourself at risk for halitosis (bad breath), bleeding gums, gingivitis, tooth decay, and even bone loss. It seems rather silly to risk these serious health issues when simply brushing your teeth correctly could help prevent such problems.
Different dentists may have slightly different recommendations on how to brush teeth correctly, but there are many important points that remain the same. In order to be sure that your teeth are in the best possible shape, you will want to incorporate the following steps into your tooth brushing routine.
First, a good quality toothbrush is essential in any dental hygiene routine. This toothbrush should be equipped with soft bristles so that you do not damage your gums while you are brushing your teeth. When learning how to brush teeth properly you will want to take your toothbrush and wet it down with water before placing a small drop of toothpaste onto the brush. From there you will take your toothbrush and turn it to a 45 degree angle at your gum line.
You should always start with your upper row of teeth. First brush the outer surface. Begin at the front of your top teeth, and slowly move towards the back of your mouth. Then repeat on the other side. Now brush the inner side of your upper teeth in the same way. Don't forget to brush also behind your last tooth. Finally brush the chewing surface.
While you are brushing you teeth you should use small circular strokes to completely cover the surface of the tooth and to avoid placing too much pressure on each individual tooth. You should try to focus on no more than three teeth at a time. Be sure that you spend adequate time on the gum line because that is where much of the debris can settle. After you have finished cleaning the top teeth you should move onto the bottom row of teeth and repeat the process. In total brushing your teeth should take at least two minutes.
After you have brushed your teeth, you will want to floss in between your teeth. It is important for you to floss each tooth thoroughly to prevent the accumulation of tartar and plaque. Flossing is also essential to keep your gum tissue in top notch form. After you finish flossing you will want to rinse your mouth again to get rid of any food particles that were stuck between your teeth. From there you may want to use a mouthwash to swish for about one to two minutes so that your mouth is further disinfected.
Simply following this process twice a day will take you a long way towards trouble-free teeth and gums.
