In the world of competitive athletics, the ability to jump is often an edge that is afforded only the most gifted athletes. Does it have to be that way? No, it does not. So what actually does more for vertical jump development: plyometrics or weight lifting?
Truth be told, neither one has a distinct or significant advantage over the other. The fact is, both are important to improving the ability to leap.
Either one can be pursued as a singular path to develop hops and each will yield measurable results. The same is true for any number of jumping enhancement ideas. Jump shoes can work to some degree. Weight vests help. Just plain jumping overload can make a difference. And the list goes on.
It is entirely possible to add one to four inches to a jump reach by working hard at one or more of a lot of different techniques. But there are limitations.
Taking a shotgun approach to develop vertical jump can provide acceptable results. But rarely does it produce real performance changing outcomes.
The only way to gain a vertical jump increase in the 8 to 12 inch category, or even more, is via a well established, comprehensive jump improvement system that has proved successful over time with a variety of athletes in a number of sports.
It is not possible to master performance in any given sport by working at only some of the fundamentals while ignoring training in others. That would be analogous to getting into a street brawl with one hand tied behind your back. The kind of leaps that gain the attention and respect of others will only be achieved by training every aspect of jump development.
Thus, if someone is serious about improving their vertical they will need to get into a program that addresses development of all of the factors associated with jumping. Anything less will lead to ever diminishing results.
So are plyometrics important? Absolutely. It will be necessary to pursue plyos in order to become more of a leaper.
What about weight lifting? Strength development is critical to increasing hops. Leaving it out would create a large hole in a vertical jump training system. But it is important to note a very significant point relative to strength development. Having access to a weight room, although obviously of value, is not a requirement for strength development. There are alternative exercises that will achieve the same outcome. A valid program will include those alternatives.
But as valuable as both of those factors are, there are many more aspects to achieving eye popping results in vertical jumping. All of them must be addressed to get there.
For instance, jump form must be fully understood and implemented. Improper form leads to lower jump reach numbers. Learn, understand and employ the elements of proper form and a vertical jump increases.
Additionally, training to become a leaper must include the knowledge of how to achieve proper muscle recovery time. Overused, over trained, over taxed muscles lead to lesser, not greater, hops. A comprehensive program includes this factor in it's training routine.
Another integral aspect of such training is the all important issue of nutrition. Getting a handle on this critical element will enhance results significantly.
And there are more points of emphasis that must be understood and employed to gain that huge increase in jump reach noted earlier. It is achievable but only if an athlete takes an approach to developing vertical jump that includes all of the required training elements.
Anyone who is serious about changing their leaping status and who desires to gain a significant edge over their competition must pursue a comprehensive jump improvement program. To do less is to invest a lot of time and hard work into a flawed routine that will yield only minimal results.
Common sense dictates that all that time and effort is better served by doing things properly while going for the gold. Knowing what to do and how to do it will turn average jumpers into amazing leapers.
