People age, and will inevitably lose teeth that may be brought about by injury, disease, or just the usual progressive stages we all have to go through. Missing teeth, as with other changes to a person's facial appearance, have negative effects on our self-confidence. With the discovery of implant dentistry, people whose teeth had fallen out no longer have to live with the lifelong inconvenience and embarrassment. Dental implants provide security and durability of permanently implanted teeth.
These implants are great options that let patient replace missing tooth with a new one that looks, feels, and works exactly like the tooth they've lost. In the first step of this process, a skilled dentist, such as the Westchester implant dentist, surgically implants a titanium post or screw in a patient's jaw. After gums have healed around the inserted post, the replacement tooth is then attached on top of it.
History of Dental Implants
The history of these implants can be traced back to the 7th century. First implants were originally made of sea shell. They were discovered during the 1930's, in the Mayan burial sites which were placed in a young female's jaw bone.
Approximately twenty years after the discovery of the mandible or jaw bone, Per-Ingvar Branemark, a Swedish professor made the first big step towards the current dental implant procedures, known as oral implantology. Professor Branemark and his team were then studying the aspects of the bone's healing process in the laboratory of the University of Lund. In the course of their experiment, they screwed a titanium metal cylinder into the thigh bone of the animal test subject.
It was not until after they had finished the initial experiment that Professor Brånemark observed that the metal cylinder had merged with the bone. After that discovery, Professor Brånemark started focusing on how to use the osseointegration, by which the phenomenon was called, to help humans. He, then, further found that titanium screws could be used as bone anchors for the teeth. Titanium, as researchers came to know, was the only successful material that works for dental implants. Other doctors had also been exploring the idea of implants for years even before Professor Branemark's discovery.
Subsequent to the scientific scrutiny of his papers, the procedure had gained the faith of other doctors. The guidelines of the implantology were to be presented in 1982 during the Toronto Conference in Clinical Dentistry. The public then started to realize that these implants were safe. The standardization of the procedure in the conference proved to have jumpstarted the dental implant procedure.
Commercialized oral implantology developed in the 1980's. Osseointegration has also been used to permanently attach bridges and individual teeth into patient's mouth. The implants had 90% success rate in the overall cases.
In the next two decades, technology continued to improve the dental implant process. Slight modifications were made to the titanium, and proved to have increased healing time. As time passes, practice of dentistry advances more, and patients will carry on as dental implants become easier, quicker, and less painful.
