How do you make sure rice doesn't stick to the bottom and sides of the rice cooker so that it's easy to clean?

It's especiallhy hard to remove rice which has hardened . What's the best technique to remove them? I tried steel wool but it scratches the surface of the container. Is there a specific technique I don't know about that you can do to make sure that it doesn't stick to the sides and bottom in the first place?
